“What Goes Around Comes Around…Even Luggage!”

Years ago, I was going down an escalator when the strap that connected my small and large luggage to one another broke. Like it had a mission, the small luggage took off down the escalator, fast! At the bottom of the escalator, I could see two women who were about to step off. Before I had the time to yell, “Watch out!” the luggage hit them and knocked them both over. I looked up and behind me, as to blame someone else by saying, “Whose luggage was that?”

 

But there was nobody there. I thought these two women were going to beat me up. But instead, I was oddly surprised that when I reached the bottom of the escalator, I found both of them on the ground laughing hysterically. One of the women said to her friend, “Wow… that woke me up!”

 

I remember thinking, “Whatever you guys have, I want some of it.” That situation created an example to follow: that when life knocks you over, it’s okay to laugh. Laughter heals the wounds and embarrassment.

 

Years later, while I was heading down an escalator at O’Hare airport in Chicago, life provided me the opportunity to remember the example set by those two women. At about three quarters of the way down the escalator, I heard an enthusiastic voice shout, “Here it comes!” Perhaps I would have reacted faster had the voice shouted something like, “Heads up!” “Incoming!” “Watch out!” “Move your butt!” or “Get out of the way!”

 

Not sensing the alarm, I slowly and casually turned my head in the direction of the voice to see what appeared to be a 1960s Samsonite hard suitcase with no wheels plummeting down the stairs. Before I could even say, “No way!” the luggage hit me with such force, it knocked all my luggage and me down!

 

I have to admit; my gut response was to react with, “Why?! Control your luggage, man!” But, then the example of those two women who I had knocked over year’s prior popped into my head. I remembered that it’s okay to laugh, so I did!

 

Things became even funnier when the old man got to the bottom of the escalator and said, “Looks like I gotcha! Son, if I had been bowling, I would have got the spare!” That’s attitude in action.
