Why do people lie about how they feel?
We all do it. Do what? Lie about how we feel. Someone enters, asks how you are, and you say “good” even though you aren’t good, even though you are at the verge of tears.
.
So why do you tell people you’re good when you’re really not? There are endless reasons, but here are some:
.
You fear what someone might think of you, your life, or your situation if they knew how you really felt.
.
You feel the person you are talking to will not be able to help. Or, you do not want that person’s help so you pretend all is well.
.
You fear placing your burden on someone else so you hide the truth.
.
Or, you fear speaking the truth because you feel it will haunt you. No, hiding the truth haunts you. The truth will set you free!
.
When someone truly asks you how you’re feeling, tell the truth. That person is asking because they actually care.
.
Most of the time, people ask “how are you” as a conversation starter. Just for kicks, try saying something different. Like, “Much better now that you’re here.”. You could even add some humor to it, like, “Great now that the pee stain in my pants has dried.”
.
You and I will both continue to say “good” to most people, not letting them know our troubles. And that’s okay ONLY if the following is true: You must share your troubles with someone and/or something (journal). If you don’t, that bottle you have will break!
.
Remember that. And remember that smiles may show happiness but true smiles show true happiness.
