And so I sat, on the beach, with my board, and watched, from a safe distance the waves crashing. My last time out was hard, and work, and deadly, almost. Maybe tomorrow conditions would be better. People would understand, certainly, if I just watched. And then, just then, I heard it. The silence. The calm. The peace.
I gathered my board and made my way to the surf. I didn’t know what the day would hold, but I knew it would be empty for me if I did not try. My 18 year old cat was dying and the inevitable day arrived that he needed to be put out of his misery.
My best friend had given him to me a week after my mother died and my friend died a few years later in a horseback riding accident. So the cat, needless to say, was very special to me.
Skye looked up at me and said, “Miss Carole? Miss Carole, my grandpa died last month.”
“Yes, Honey, I know.”
“Well, Miss Carole, Gambler won’t be lonely in Heaven ‘cause my Grandpa will play with him.”
There are angels on earth and some of them are only three or four years old! What kindness; what a thought process for a three year old!
