Here are some happy stories:

I was on track teams from the fifth grade through my sophomore year in high school. Many of our track meets were on weekday afternoons so not many parents could get off work to watch us run. Those who did come were usually mothers.

My father was Resident Civil Engineer for the Southern Pacific, in charge of the Phoenix Division. He always arranged to come to my track meets, the only father there to watch a daughter. He always cheered for me.

In the early 1990’s, I decided to go on a cattle drive. I had recently seen CITY SLICKERS, and realized that this is something I had always wanted to do, but didn’t think they still existed. They did.

I practiced for about 9 months, because I hadn’t ridden for almost 20 years. I spent a week on the trail, riding 6-8 hours a day, moving the cows in various directions, and loving it. This changed my life.

I loved the simplicity, and I loved being around animals all day. I then began to commit to horse-back riding, and did a series of one-week riding adventures for 12 years. Eventually, I bought my own horse and began competing in horse shows. I’ve now been back to riding for 15 years - and loving the balance it brings to my life.

Ron Burns the Artist-in-Residence for The Humane Society of the United States on how one dog changed his life…

Once upon a time in an enchanted land called Sedona, a set of soulful brown eyes looked up at me and I knew I had just found a new best friend. His name was Rufus and the animal-human connection we shared is the stuff of dreams. I rescued him from the lonely ranch where he had been abandoned, but would soon find out he was really rescuing me.

Looking for a subject to paint, I was at a loss, until one day I looked down at Rufus’ sweet puppy face and was inspired to paint his portrait. From that first painting, until he left me in May 2007, Rufus was with me every step of the way - watching as I painted, listening to me faithfully, and, most importantly, always representing the heart behind my art.
