Of all your achievements, what are you most proud of?
That was what a reporter wanted to know while she interviewed me for a newspaper feature. All the major accomplishments I’ve achieved in my twenty-five years swam through my head at lightning speed. Which is my proudest achievement?
I could tell her that I was most proud of mastering grade level after only about 180 days of school attendance. You see, owing to years of hospitalization for the severe juvenile rheumatoid arthritis that has been ravaging my body since infancy, I didn’t receive any education until age eleven when my health was finally stabilized. My thirst for knowledge paid off after only about 180 days of attendance, for I had mastered grade level and immediately entered regular sixth grade in middle school.
Or I could tell the reporter that I’m proudest of the fact that without either eyesight or Braille, I was able to write and calculate long chemistry equations in my head, and complete my GED test, including mathematical calculations and problem solving, graphs, and an essay; still scoring an exceptional 3280 on the test, for which I received a special recognition award.
Perhaps my proudest achievement is that I’m able to write, format, publish, and promote my books, and design and maintain my own Web site, as a blind award-winning author with two handful of book awards.
But, you see, all that would be a lie. None of these things is what I’m most proud of.
“That I’m happy with my life,” I answered the reporter unhesitatingly.
“There are people who seem to have everything, but they lack happiness in their lives. They envy what others have and aren’t content with what they have,” I explained. “But despite my multiple physical disabilities and all that I have to go through, I’m very happy with my life. I’m content with what I have. That’s what I’m most proud of.”

I purchased “The Secret.” The book contains The Law of Attraction. After reading the book I tried it out. Driving home on Thanksgiving Day, I visualized what I wanted for dinner. I could see red, yellow, orange and green peppers to go with sausages. However we didn’t have the peppers. Furthermore, all the stores were closed and it was the middle of October. But as I was driving I could see, taste, and smell my dinner. Forty-five minutes later we drove by a roadside stand in the middle of nowhere. Inside a small basket were the brightest and tastiest peppers I have ever had.

All I ever wanted to do was write a travel book. I wanted to travel around the country, immersing myself in the people, culture, habits, and personalities of each place I visited, becoming part of the communities by working or volunteering. Well, I did. Then I buckled down and poured everything I’d learned into a book proposal. The literary agent loved my proposal, accepted me as a client, sent out my work, and nine months of rejection followed. I rewrote the proposal, and in one month my agent sold IMMERSION TRAVEL USA: THE BEST AND MOST MEANINGFUL VOLUNTEERING, LIVING, AND LEARNING EXCURSIONS. My second travel book published was VOLUNTEER VACATIONS ACROSS AMERICA (Countryman Press, 2009) and now I’m working on my third. Wow, I love it.

My name is Danny Kofke and I am currently a special education teacher and author in Georgia. I recently wrote a book “How To Survive (and perhaps thrive) On A Teacher’s Salary.”
I started off as an unknown author and, with a lot of hard work and many early mornings, have gotten some positive media exposure.
My book has been featured in a number of magazines, on a few television shows, on numerous radio shows, and in various newspapers. I wanted to share this with you because I dislike it when I hear people say they can’t do something. I hope my story gives hope to others and shows a positive story in these tough times.
