As the San Diego Highwayman , I go out “playing on the freeway” to lift my spirits helping others. Been doing it for over 40 years.

This particular day I didn’t find anyone in need of my assistance for the 2 1/2 hours I’d been cruising, so it was a downer. I’m headed home now, 9:30 at night, coming up on my home off-ramp when all of a sudden I get pulled over by a California Highway Patrol Officer!

Well, the officer comes up to my window, puts his hand in and shakes mine, and says, “for the 17 years he’s been on the East County beat, he’s seen me at accidents and breakdowns rendering aid and never had the chance to say Thank You cause I always leave so fast!”

I said “Officer, you almost gave me a heart attack sneaking on me like that!” He laughed :). Kept my spirits high for quite a while after and raises them every time I think of it.

The 75-year-old gentleman told a group of children an incident of several decades ago. His high school had contracted with a consulting firm to determine the aptitudes of the students for various types of careers. The consultant told the man, “The good news is that you have very good hands. You should go into a career like being an automobile mechanic. The bad news is that you have no aptitude for math or teaching.”

The gentleman smiled. His love for math had been instilled by a grade school teacher, so the words of the expert consultant rolled off him “like water rolling off a duck’s back.” The man’s name is Israel Aumann - Professor Israel Aumann. He has been a professor at Hebrew University in Jerusalem for many years, and was now addressing an assembly of New York City children in the grade school he had attended as a child.

He had recently received the Nobel Prize in economics. He admonished the children to pursue their passion in life, regardless of what anyone else dictates. They, like he, should not be deterred as they strive to achieve their goals.

Four years ago, at age 69, I entertained a bottom of the barrel house guest from hell. In an attempt to recover from my outrage, I committed myself to a project for which I had no talent, little education and no direction. I announced to the world that I was writing a book about house guests.

After what I compare to a three year pregnancy, Host or Hostage? A Guide for Surviving House Guests was born. But then what? Who will read this self-published book? Who will care?

I called Logan Jenkins, a local columnist with the San Diego Union Tribune who then used my book as a muse for a column. From there, many great people spread the word about it. At age 73, this retired English teacher is launched on a new career as author/writer and public speaker. I am happier than ever before in my life.

The Good Lord looked down upon the earth and cast His eyes upon Cairo, Egypt. He had positioned a tall, thin man on a balcony, recently arriving as a short-term consultant from a L.A. Company. His wife had died two years before. The man had escaped the birthday party going full blast in the adjourning penthouse apartment.

The Good Lord had brought a woman to Cairo, to be a counselor at the Cairo American College. She is recovering from a marriage in the States, one that never should have happened. She sees the lonely figure on the balcony, silhouetted against the lighted Sphinx.

“I brought them together,” muses the Good Lord, “and now it is up to them.” The woman opens the balcony door, approaches the man. He reaches out his hand, filled with peanuts to share with her. Little did she know that, for the rest of their lives, spent together, he would always share what he has with her.
