At a certain point in my life I was down and out. It seemed like one bad thing after another. I was walking around the lake near my house and sat down by the water and watched the sunrise, and just as the sun started to shine on the water, the song “Fate” by New Model Army came on my walkman, and by the third verse I was singing along at the top of my voice.
All the pieces of the puzzle fell into place. It was such a magical, manic but magical, moment that I still remember it as if it were yesterday, even though this was nearly twenty years ago.
That one moment at the edge of the water I suddenly realized that I was letting fate get at me. I decided to fight back. This meant relatively simple things; prioritizing, getting out of bed no matter how hard it was, finally letting people in and talking about my problems, fixing my finances, and most of all, taking charge. It still meant hardship, but I could face it because I had a goal. I not only could face it, but I did and am doing much better today.

At the age of 35 I was a stay at home mother with four children living in an unpalatable marriage behind the facade of a country club life. I filed for divorce as a leap of faith and realized an avalanche of anger and litigation led the children and I to become homeless, without a car, and on welfare.
I didn’t have time to go back to school because my children needed food and housing right away. So I sat down on my bedroom floor one day and created a plan that took me from an earning capacity of $27,000 to the president and CEO of a hospital foundation within just a few years. My website has all free information on how I did it. My book “Starting Over” will be released in November. I never dreamed I’d go from welfare to CEO.

I was laid off shortly after moving to the DC area. Thankfully, I was able to land a higher-paying position in wireless telecommunications that really launched my career in product development. I was able to work with some of the brightest people in the business and make lifelong connections.
I need to always be ready for new opportunities by having my resume up-to-date. More importantly, I should continue networking even when things “feel” steady and secure. Lesson? Talk to more people. Be more optimistic. Understand that bad things are inevitable and that I have always landed on my feet.

On a street corner, in a city like so many others, these ladies, these Hallelujah Ladies, offer hope and prayer. Maybe they do so in a place that isn’t so desirable, in a time when most haven’t had their coffee, and in a way that makes us question why. I wonder, quietly, and to myself, if my wondering, my thinking of them, and my hoping that each day I can count on them to be there. Well, I wonder, isn’t that at least half the battle.
In a city that has seen its share of violence, gang activity, drugs and heartache, I wonder if perhaps they are on this street, in front of a boarded up building because that is where the healing needs to begin. Perhaps, just perhaps, they are exactly where they are supposed to be. Maybe it’s not as crazy as I originally thought.
