When we are old women, we will sit on a ratty, old, Irish blanket in the park and smile because we will have learned the secret of life. Our smiles will look odd to those walking by, because this secret we learned when we were teenagers is just that. We will have learned to stick good pizza crust in our pockets for later, to drink wine from a 2 liter bottle, and to never judge anyone for what they have or don’t have. For these reasons we will always have our favorite cup ready to toast.
We were lucky. We know that. We accept that although to us, and most, our years were less than some. To us they were more than most. In plastic cups, in the park, on an old throw, in recognition of that, we toast. Cheers.

Ever since junior high, I knew I wanted to be a computer game programmer. For many years it was a great job and I made plenty of money while I was at it. Unfortunately, the computer game industry is quite competitive and expects very long work hours.
After many years I couldn’t take it any more so one day I walked into work and wrote “I quit” on a post-it note. I didn’t know what I was going to do next but I knew it wasn’t computer programming for some large company.
I ended up moving my family to Hawaii and now I’m a Kona coffee farmer. My life is quite different from when I was programming. In some ways it’s harder but I’m still quite happy that I made the change.

My 18 year old cat was dying and the inevitable day arrived that he needed to be put out of his misery. My best friend had given him to me a week after my mother died and my friend died a few years later in a horseback riding accident. So the cat, needless to say, was very special to me. I was too upset to drive to the Vet so my neighbor, Colleen, came with her four year old daughter and another friend’s three year old.
Jessica, the young child, looked up at me and said, “Miss Carole, Miss Carole.”
“Yes, Honey,” I sobbed.
“Miss Carole, you have a booger hanging out of your nose.” Out of the mouths of babes! It was the first time I had laughed in days.
Skye, the other young child, looked up at me and said, “Miss Carole, my grandpa died last month.”
“Yes, Honey, I know.”
“Well, Miss Carole, Gambler won’t be lonely in Heaven ‘cause my Grandpa will play with him.” There are angels on earth and some of them are only three or four years old! What kindness. What a thought process for a three year old!

I was a Grade 10 student at Niagara District High School. I was a shy girl with few friends, smart, but with a chipped front tooth my stepfather refused to pay for. On the day that our class presented a speech on someone we considered a hero, my life changed forever; and for the best, thanks to my English teacher Mrs. McCartney.
Mrs. McCartney thought I had the ability to be a public speaker. She and another teacher, Mrs. Fedorkow, who was also a professional public speaker, wanted to train me. I was thrilled! They spent hours with me, training me.
I competed in all public speaking contests that I could, even did debating competition. Two years later, I was the female North American Public Speaking champion for the International Order of Oddfellows and Rebekahs. Twenty years later, I was one of the first, if not the first, female morning radio news and sports anchor in a major market in Ontario and Canada.
Today, I have my own business selling both my voice and my writing skills, and I also produce radio commercials and videos, for which I train and use local children from the age of 4 and up. Hoping to give them the chance at a life they may not have considered.
